BACKGROUND
The Dennis Lillee Fast Bowling Academy is
a specialised coaching and talent identification
program operated by the WACA, aimed at fostering
the development of talented, young fast bowlers
from around Western Australia.
Launched on 11 June 2002, the Academy’s
purpose is to not only replenish and develop
WA’s fast-bowling stocks, but to also
continue building the WACA’s reputation
as a world-leader in the production of fast
bowling.
The concept was initiated and developed by
the State Cricket Committee (formerly Interstate
and International Cricket Committee) in conjunction
with former State Coach Michael Veletta, fast-bowling
legend Dennis Lillee and WACA Coaching Manager
Doug Harris.
Lillee, who works extensively with young bowlers
around Australia and on the Sub-continent,
is regarded as cricket's greatest fast-bowler
and provides the academy with World-class
expertise and knowledge. He is also regarded
as the greatest fast-bowlers ever produced
by WA and because of his home-grown knowledge,
is the ideal person to head the academy. |

THE ACADEMY
Each season hundreds of WA’s young fast
bowlers are filmed by the WACA’s Coaching
Department. Following this initial audition
process, Dennis Lillee analyses the film and
selects the Academy Squad with help from the
WACA’s Talent Identification and Coaching
Staff.
After selection, various capacities of the
young fast bowlers are measured. Once the
information has been gathered Dennis Lillee
and former State Coach Darryl Foster, design
an individual program for each fast bowler.
Lillee and Foster then work one-on-one with
the young quicks to maximise their strengths
and harness their talents.
The Dennis Lillee Fast Bowling Academy is
creating a system whereby raw, young pacemen
can be easily recognised and moved into a
world-class fast bowling program to help realise
their dreams. The specialised coaching is
designed to develop the bowler’s talents
to a level that will continue WA’s tradition
for producing quality fast bowlers who can
expose the WACA Ground’s pace-friendly
bowling conditions.
While Lillee and Foster provide the Academy’s
participants with expertise and direction,
the success of the program is largely dependant
on the individual’s ability to implement
their individual programs. |
