Have A Go
A modified version of cricket where girls and boys (5 - 10 years) learn the skills of cricket with an emphasis on skill development, games and enjoyment.

Modified Mixed Junior Cricket
Generally under 10 to under 12 age. Rules modified to ensure all players have the opportunity to bat, bowl and field (eg Super 8s). Super 8 centres operate across the metropolitan area. A girls only U13 competition is currently in development and running in the North East Zone.

Western Fury Shield
Girls’ Super 8’s carnivals played over one day, between Primary schools for year 5 - 7 students. (Girls can also play in mixed formats of this competition, generally referred to as the Retravision Warriors Shield. Participation based format, operating across the metropolitan and regional areas in WA.

Community Club Junior Cricket
Ideally, specific competitions for girls should be available at a variety of age groups to allow for participation through to senior cricket. Currently there are female specific competitions at U15 and U17 level. In regions where established structures for girls are not currently available, the WACA and Cricket Australia recommend:

  • Separate girls’ competitions are developed to reduce the gaps in the pathway to senior level. • Girls’ teams play in a traditional boys competition (after under 12) two years above the competition age limit where ability dictates (eg Under 16 girls’ team to play in Under 14 boys competition).
  • Individual girls play in traditional boys’ team (after under 12) two years above the competition age limit where ability dictates (eg 16 year old girl may play in Under 14 boys competition).

Milo Shield
Super 8’s format played among secondary schools as one day carnivals. A year 8/9 and year 10 competition is available to girls. Participation based.

Secondary Schools Cricket Competition
Provides a girls’ Super 8 division. Played between schools in a one day carnival with a final held between the top two schools on a separate day.

Girls Cricket Competition
(15s & 17s Divisions)
A dedicated girls competition played in quarters format. Standard cricket rules are played with some modified rules applied to ensure participation and enjoyment. Operates in the metropolitan area and caters for 15s and 17s age divisions.

Community Club Cricket
Refers to the WACA Women’s Cricket Competition. Two grades available (A & B Grade). Operates in the metropolitan area.

Development Pathway
Under 15 Talent Carnival
In March each year, girls are selected from the local girls and boys competitions to participate in a round robin carnival. This carnival is to assist with the selection for the state U17 squad for the following year.

Under 17 State Program
Commences in August each year. The first opportunity for players to represent their state. A squad of approximately 20 players are selected to expand their skill development, mental and physical skills, nutritional requirements and game sense awareness. A final squad of 13 players are selected to represent WA at the National Championships conducted in January each year.

Under 19 State Program
Commences in July each year. The final opportunity for players to represent their state at youth age level. A squad is selected to further their skill development, mental and physical skills, nutritional requirements and game sense awareness. A final squad of 13 players are selected to represent WA at the National Championships conducted in January each year. Following the Under 19 Australian Championships a team of approximately 13 players are selected to represent Australia. Players have the opportunity to play against another cricket nation. This program is not conducted every season.

Australian Development Squad
In April, a squad of approximately 25, U17 and U19 players are selected. These players are provided with state based coaching support from the AIS/Nation Female Head Coach and state based coaches, focusing on skill acquisition and correction, game development as well as fitness, injury reporting and rehabilitation.

Western Fury
Players are selected in the Western Fury squad each year to compete in the Women’s National Cricket League (1-day cricket competition).
