SunSmart Secondary Schools Competition

Competition Outlines
The SUNSMART SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ CRICKET COMPETITION is WA’s premier schools cricket competition open to all school aged children, and is conducted by the Western Australian Schools’ Cricket Council (WASCC) together with the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA).

The competition’s purpose is to provide WA Secondary School Students with an opportunity to participate in cricket at the highest standards possible. It is also designed to encourage schools to foster in their student’s ideals of good sportsmanship, honesty and strength of application, as well as identify and consolidate a strong sense of loyalty to the school and a strong school spirit for players, students, staff, parents and the general community.

The competition is divided into four main competing groups of competition:

  • TOP TIER LIMITED OVERS
  • SECOND TIER LIMITED OVERS
  • BOYS SUPER 8’s CARNIVAL
  • GIRLS SUPER 8’s CARNIVAL

Limited Overs Competition
All games are played as limited over fixtures and must be completed within term one of the school calendar year. Schools compete on a regional basis, then play-off on a knockout basis, at finals. Early round and regional knockout matches are conducted by mutual arrangement between competing schools. A match consists of minimum 25 six ball overs per innings with a maximum of 50 six ball overs. Each team receives the same number of overs, unless the team batting first is dismissed for less than its specified overs.
Super 8's Competition
Super 8's games are played between two teams of eight players and consist of a maximum of 16 six ball overs bowled by each side. Bowlers are limited to a 20 metre run-up (limit also applies to the wicketkeeper’s position) with eight runs awarded for any ball passing over the boundary on the full.

Former Test Stars Honoured with Naming of Shields
Western Australian secondary school students will be fighting it out for the Kim Hughes, Graeme Wood, Geoff Marsh and Peta Verco shields in the 2007-08 Sunsmart Secondary Schools Competition.

Schools in the top tier limited overs competition will battle for the Kim Hughes shield, honouring the only WA born Test captain.

This year’s winners John Forrest Senior High School will be looking to claim the shield again, for the third time in a row in 2008, with the final to be played in April.

The Graeme Wood Shield will be the prize in the second tier limited overs competition. 66 teams compete in honour of the prolific former Test opener. Mazenod were the proud winners of the Graeme Wood Shield for 2007. Graeme attended the school personally to present the trophy.

In the Super 8’s boys competitions the Geoff Marsh Shield was won for the third year in a row by the Lesmurdie Boys.

In the Super 8’s Girls competitions the Peta Verco Shield was won for the third time in a row by the Kelmscot Girls.

Matches in the Sunsmart Secondary Schools Competition commence early in term one of the 2008 school year.
