A sensational performance with the ball by WA skipper Ashton Turner has seen his team chalk up a hard-fought 28-run win over Victoria in the National Under 17 Championships in Adelaide.
Turner, from Fremantle Cricket Club, captured 6-42 in 21 overs as Victoria was dismissed for 268 in reply to WA's total of 296, which they posted on the opening day at Park 25.
After Willetton's Simon Mackin removed Vics' opener Ben Hillard for two, Michael Condy (62), Jordan Wyatt (57) and Mathew Begbie (99) threatened to take the game away from WA by putting their team in a strong position at 2-200.
But Turner inspired a stunning collapse by the Victorians, who lost their last eight wickets for 68, to ensure WA sits on top of the standings with five wins from five matches, and the only unbeaten team at the carnival after NSW suffered a shock loss to the ACT in their two day encounter.
The teams enjoy a rest day tomorrow before WA confronts the ACT in their next two day assignment at Bice Oval on Sunday and Monday.
And the WA girls are unbeaten at their carnival in Brisbane after crushing Tasmania by 129 runs at Dixon Oval yesterday.
After being sent in to bat by Tassie skipper Hannah Short, WA made 9-192 from their 45 overs. Subiaco Marist's Emily Johnston backed up her match-winning 29 not out from the opening day against the ACT with another unbeaten knock of 50 to lead the way for her side.
Tasmania were bundled out for just 63 in reply. Sally Hocking and Beth Wimbush both took 2-9 from four overs, while Captain Chloe Piparo captured 2-10 from three. Emily Hessell (1-2), Lauren Mainwaring (1-4), Bhavi Devchand (1-7) and Beth Mayne (1-12) were the other successful bowlers.
The result sees WA top the standings with 11 points after two matches, but they will face a stern test with a Twenty20 double-header against NSW and South Australia to be next on their agenda.
