A strong performance with the ball has given the PKF Tasmanian Tigers day two honours and they have their noses in front at the halfway point of the Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield match against the Retravision Warriors at the WACA Ground.
The visitors are 1-31 in their second innings, an overall lead of 59, after 13 wickets fell on an eventful day two at WA's home of cricket.
The Warriors took just six overs to wrap up the Tigers' first innings this morning, with Steve Magoffin claiming the last two wickets to fall - Tim MacDonald (no score) and Tim Paine (31), both caught behind by Luke Ronchi.
It gave the ex-Queenslander his sixth five wicket haul for WA, finishing with the brilliant figures of 6-44 from 27.5 economical overs as the visitors were bundled out for 261.
After the early loss of Wes Robinson for seven, fellow opener Liam Davis and skipper Marcus North began to find their feet and were building a strong partnership until the latter was out for 23.
Debutante Michael Swart made his way to the wicket and after tentatively getting off the mark for his first runs in interstate cricket, he looked solid in the post-lunch session and appeared well set.
MacDonald got the breakthrough, with the former Warrior getting one to jag back and get the faintest of touches from Swart as he tried to leave, and the Joondalup Captain was on his way for 23.
The dismissal sparked a collapse which saw the home side lose 5-47. Through the carnage, Davis held firm and went on to record his second first class fifty for WA, and the first for just over two years.
He eventually fell for 67, but Luke Pomersbach and Steve Magoffin kept the Warriors' hopes of first innings points alive with a 28-run eighth wicket stand.
Magoffin departed for 20, and Pomersbach was out a short time later for 32. At 9-203 and with 59 still required for first innings points, Michael Hogan chanced his arm and blazed away to strike 24 from just ten deliveries.
He clubbed three successive sixes off Xavier Doherty, but the Tigers' spinner had the last laugh by having Hogan stumped to finish the WA innings on 233.
The Tigers shared the wickets, with MacDonald, Doherty, Brendan Drew and Adam Griffith all taking two, and Adam Maher picking up one.
Tasmania had 18 overs to negotiate prior to stumps. and lost Rhett Lockyear for 18, who edged to Ronchi off the bowling of Brad Knowles.
Ed Cowan (seven not out) and Alex Doolan (two not out) will resume tomorrow morning when play gets under way on day three at the WACA Ground at 10.30am.
