Players representing three Perth schools and five district clubs will be introduced to a new format in the 2010 SunSmart Junior Girls Cricket Competition, which will be held throughout term one of the school year.
In the Under 15s division, two Perth College sides will mix it with students from Santa Maria and players from the Rockingham-Mandurah and South Perth Cricket Clubs.
The Under 17s competition will be divided into two pools of four teams - in the “black” pool are players from Subiaco Marist and Midland-Guildford Cricket Clubs as well as two sides from St Brigid's College. On the “gold” side are pupils from Santa Maria and St Brigid's, as well as players representing the Whitfords and South Perth Cricket Clubs.
The format for the younger age division will be a round robin, while the fixtures for the older age groups will include semi finals and finals to decide the winner.
Matches have been changed to an eight-a-side, twenty-over format in an attempt to make the sport more dynamic and attractive to young women.
As the WACA wants to see every player given the opportunity to either bat or bowl in every game, batters will be forced to retire not out on 30 runs or after 30 deliveries, and players may bowl for a maximum of four overs. There is a 60 minute time limit on each innings.
The SunSmart Girls Cricket Competition was established in 1964 to provide an opportunity for young females to play and enjoy the game of cricket.
