The Warriors are poised to send Tom Moody off on a winning note despite a Chris Lynn-inspired fight back from the Queensland Bulls on day two of the Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield match at the Gabba.
The home side is 6-209 in its second innings, a lead of just 29, after they were earlier forced to follow on by Warriors Captain Marcus North when dismissed for 106 in their first innings.
19-year old Chris Lynn has been the standout performer for the Bulls in just his second Shield match, with the former Queensland Under 17 and Under 19 skipper ending the day unbeaten on 116.
At one stage it looked as though the game may struggle to go past two days, but an unbroken 73-run stand for the seventh wicket by Lynn and Ben Cutting (20 not out) took the Bulls into a lead and the match into another day.
Warriors paceman Steve Magoffin carried on the impressive form he has shown in recent weeks, picking up 3-15 from 16 economical overs to go alongside 3-22 from 13 overs in the Bulls' first innings.
The home side began day two on 5-62, 224 runs adrift of the Warriors' first innings total of 286 and another 75 runs away from avoiding the follow-on.
Two of the Bulls' in-form batsmen this summer were at the crease though in wicket-keeper Chris Hartley and skipper Chris Simpson, and they began the morning confidently by taking the score to 89 before the rot set in.
Hartley was out for 12, caught by Wes Robinson off the bowling of Ben Edmondson, and Simpson followed for ten to give Magoffin his third wicket.
Edmondson snared two wickets in two balls when he snared Chris Swan (nine) and Luke Feldman (no score), before Brad Knowles wrapped up the innings by picking up Cutting for eight.
Facing a first innings deficit of 180 and with the Warriors' bowlers not spending too much time in the field, North had no hesitation choosing to send the home side back in for another hit.
The Bulls began their second innings disastrously, as they slumped to 2-31 with opener Wade Townsend (nine) and first drop Craig Philipson (eight) both caught behind by Luke Ronchi from the bowling of Nathan Coulter-Nile and Magoffin respectively.
Knowles then got in on the action, removing Ryan Broad for 14, but a 48-run stand between Lynn and Nathan Reardon threatened to take the Bulls back towards safety.
Magoffin again made the breakthrough, drawing an edge from Reardon which was snaffled by Coulter-Nile in the slips to bring the all-rounder's innings to an end on 14.
Hartley (four) and Simpson (eight) fell soon after - the latter caught behind from the bowling of Matt Johnston to give the Willetton all-rounder his maiden first class wicket.
But Lynn and Cutting saw out the day to keep their team's hopes of an unlikely victory alive. Play commences on day three at 8am Perth time and can be heard live and exclusively through 91.3 Sport FM.
