The WACA commissioned the piece by Greg “Smithy” Smith, cartoonist for The Sunday Times, as part of its activities to honour the special place in world cricket that the WACA Ground holds.
The cartoon has been developed into A2 posters and will be available for purchase for $10 at the Test, which begins Thursday, with Smithy also holding a special Day 1 signing session from 12-1:30pm.
Smithy said the work was one that was close to his heart.
"As a cricket fan, the WACA Ground holds a special place in my heart,” he said.
“Its legendary lightning-fast pitches, the heat wave conditions and the drama – oh, the drama – there was always something happening at the WACA Ground.
“When I sat down over a month or so ago to start work on the cartoon, I decided the brief was to pay tribute to the many characters and incidents that gave the Ground its mythical status.
“Lillee pushing off the sight screen, Walters hooking a six off the last ball, Gilchrist's rapid-fire century – the list goes on and on and on.
“So, after 47 years of entertaining the cricket world, I wanted to salute the old girl as she pulls stumps on Ashes cricket for the very last time – well played."
The sales stand for the limited edition commemorative cartoon will be located on the northern side of the Ground, near Gate 2.
