A former Australian Test and Sheffield Shield cricketer, John played in six Tests between 1968 to 1972 and played Shield cricket for Western Australia and South Australia between 1962 to 1985. In his five years as captain of Western Australian, John won four Sheffield Shield titles.
John was captain of Western Australia’s Centenary XI 1985 and Team of the 20th Century 1999/2000 and he was inducted into the WACA Gallery of Greats in 2006.
Following his retirement from First Class cricket, John was named as the new full-time Chairman of Selectors for Cricket Australia in 2011.
John’s teaching career saw him teach at various prestigious independent schools in the UK, Adelaide and Perth, where he was Headmaster at Hale School from 1989 to 2003. The new music and drama centre at Hale School in Perth was named The John Inverarity Music and Drama Centre in his honour.
He was also appointed as a Member of the University Senate by then Governor Ken Michael.
