Upper Great Southern batsman Garth Nottle has completed a
rare double by winning the Terry 'Tuck' Waldron Medal for the Country Cricketer
of the Year.
The 35-year-old left-handed batsman had already won the Waldron
Perpetual Trophy as WA's best player at last month's Commonwealth Bank Australian
Country Cricket Championships (ACCC) in Bundaberg.
Nottle made 302 runs during the Championships, including a
century against ACT and two fifties, and was named in the ACCC's Best XI.
However, Nottle completed a rare country double after being
crowned the Terry 'Tuck' Waldron Medal winner, which takes into consideration
ACCC and One Day League performances.
"To win an award in the name of Tuck, for what he's
done for country cricket, it's a privilege," Nottle said.
"These type of honours are usually all-rounders'
awards, so it was great to get a few scores as a batsman and win the honour."
Nottle, who also made a half-century during the Country XI's
defeat to Rockingham-Mandurah in the One Day League, won the award with 12
votes, ahead of Tim Hutchison (10), Matt Jenkinson (9) and last year's winner
Rodney Ford (6) who wasn't part of the 2012-13 ACCC side.
The Upper Great Southern veteran praised Hutchison and Jenkinson for their
performances at the ACCC and also reflected on WA Country's slightly disappointing
seventh-place finish at the carnival.
"We had a young and inexperienced line-up and it was a
learning curve for everyone," Nottle said.
"Hopefully the tournament will show the young guys what
you need to do to succeed at that level."
Nottle will be presented with his award at the Upper Great
Southern Association end-of-season function by Terry Waldron. |
