A team of the best cricketers from Christmas Island will battle it out against teams from across country Western Australia in the F Grade competition.

Christmas Island cricket participation has increased rapidly over the last few seasons, which has been driven by a great group of volunteers led by Christmas Island Cricket and Sporting Club president Aidan Shaw.

The Sporting Club, the most isolated in the competition, now has four teams that play on a Sunday evening.

Christmas Island Cricket and Sporting Club President Aiden Shaw said the players are thrilled by the opportunity to represent Christmas Island at Senior Country Week.

“Each and every one of our players consider it a great honour and privilege to represent Christmas Island,” Shaw said.

“Our Island home is incredibly special to us and we will wear our strips and take to the field with pride.

“The talent we have is quite incredible considering the small pool we have to choose from.

“We’ve been training and fundraising for months to make this trip possible and there is a really great buzz about the group at the moment,

“The generosity from our community has been incredible, particularly from the local businesses who have supported and sponsored our endeavour.

“We are really looking forward to testing our skills against other regional teams. As a team, we are also looking forward to building a network with other local and regional cricket clubs and promoting Christmas Island as a tourist destination.

“We consider ourselves not just cricketers but ambassadors for the Island. We want to leave a lasting positive impression on our opponents and the WACA, and give people another reason to visit Christmas Island.
