WA's batsman saw off NSW's all-star bowling attack to be 1-85 at stumps on day two in response to the home side's 8-444.

D'Arcy Short remains unbeaten on 39, with Shaun Marsh on 25.

Test star Steve Smith (103) top-scored for the Blues but his 295-ball knock came to an end when Marcus Stoinis got him to edge one into the gloves of keeper Josh Inglis.

It was gruelling work in hot conditions for WA's attack.

There were two wickets each for Stoinis (2-59), leg-spinner Liam O'Conner (2-77) and part-timer D'Arcy Short (2-39).

Seamers Matt Kelly and Liam Guthrie collected one wicket each.

WA will resume at the crease when day three gets underway from 7:30am AWST tomorrow.
