A former Sheffield Shield cricketer, Gartrell played 10 First-Class matches for WA between 1959-60 and 1962-63.

Following his retirement from First-Class cricket, Gartrell was named as a WA State Cricket Selector.

A Life Member of Midland Guildford Cricket Club (MGCC), Gartrell served on the Club’s committee for more than four decades and was President from 1996-1998.

As the inaugural President of the Midland Guildford Junior Cricket Association, Gartrell oversaw tremendous growth of the game at junior level and received Life Membership of the Association for his tireless efforts.

He also performed the roles of president, coach and committee member at Swan View Junior Cricket Club.

Gartrell was named the Lord’s Taverners WA Vintage Cricketer of the Year in 2008 for his outstanding contribution to WA cricket on the playing field and in cricket administration.
