WACA Ground Development

The iconic WACA Ground will remain the home of cricket in WA, with plans for it to be developed into a world-class facility for Members, the Perth community, players and emerging talent.

A development would see the WACA Ground become a 10,000 to 15,000-capacity boutique stadium to complement Optus Stadium, with proposed new seating facilities and significantly more shade among the range of upgrades to be provided to spectators.

Plans also include new dedicated player and high performance training facilities and resizing of the oval to accommodate WAFL matches, with the development also allowing for co-location with the West Australian Football Commission should current negotiations lead to an agreement of terms.

The future WACA Ground, together with the new world-class 60,000-seat Optus Stadium, will create a unique and impressive sporting precinct which capitalises on the future growth of cricket, other sports in WA and the East Perth community.

Depending on the construction method chosen, and when funding becomes available, the development could commence in 2018.

Project Definition Plan process

The scope of the preferred option presented in the Vision 2030 report and master plan were reviewed and refined during the PDP process, including the development of a schedule of accommodation, concept plans and a functional brief. The schedule of accommodation and functional design brief involved an extensive stakeholder consultation process, which included participation from the WACA, WA Football Commission, Cricket Australia, Department of Sport and Recreation, Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority, Trinity College and Gloucester Park.

A number of site investigations also took place during this process to ensure the project is de-risked. These included hydraulic, electrical, structural, National Construction Code, geotechnical, site contamination, town planning, heritage and turf investigations.

Further discussions will continue to be held with the relevant stakeholders, in order to further refine the PDP.
